"For growing ranks in US, preference to go out green" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-01 22:26:57

When Billy Campbell’s father died a number of years ago the family did what was expected at the measure: Bury him in a historic cemetery behind the family’s Methodist church. The setting was lovely and bucolic but Campbell a devoted land conservationist couldn’t stop thinking. “With what we spent on that funeral. I could have bought 5 or 10 acres and created a more permanent memorial to him.” With his father’s death in mind. Campbell in 1998 decided to try to marry the multibillion-dollar U. S funeral industry with the nation’s growing land conservation and environmental movements. On 38 acres in western South Carolina he opened the first conservation burial ground in the United States a stunningly beautiful stretch of woods grassland and lush creek beds where populate are buried with the simplicity of centuries past and where the proceeds go toward preserving and restoring the land.

"Temple U. Grant to Boost Ranks of Math, Science Teachers" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 13:58:29

Temple University has gotten a $2.4-million give to educate the next generation of science and math teachers. The give underwrites a schedule called "TU inform," spun out of the University of Texas. The inform says Heidi Ramirez director of Temple's Urban Education Collaborative is solving a chronic problem: "It's not just an itch. It's a real big rash actually in that there's an increasing shortage of qualified math and science teachers particularily in urban schools and districts but across the express country and particularily the region." TU Teach involves not just rigorous science and math coursework for prospective teachers at Temple but being out in the schools learning the fashion of teaching right from the get-go. Ramirez says it's hard to gauge how many students will be attracted to this program which begins next fall. But she says it's hard to create by mental act having too many -- the need is so great. "Debnam breaks ranks on Kyoto" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 21:32:38

The New South Wales Opposition energy spokesman has told an energy conference clean coal is an oxymoron and nuclear power is not a realistic option for Australia. Mr Rudd has commissioned economist Professor Ross Garnaut to look at options for an Australian carbon trading system and says he expects the first report from Professor Garnaut to be create from raw material next month. Put simply if we don't fix the environment fairly smartly then all the other "issues" ordain not be as the entire planet ordain become inhabitable! We are slowly choking in the filth created by the industries of the so called "modern" world. However similar to a frog sitting in a slowly heating pot of wet we do not realise the danger we in. But don't worry she'll be right conjoin lets undergo another beer and drop about it. Good on Peter Debnam. It shows just how serious global warming is with the latest IPCC 23 page doomsday report. Even with that Howard still plays it all down - "The world won't end tomorrow" - of course it won't but the day after.. and the world ordain end for 1/3rd of all species with just 2 degrees warming and the chances of 4 degrees is quite high. Howard has long erroneously slagged off on solar power. He must experience it can give baseload power in the form of desert based concentrating solar-thermal cater stations that hold on the alter as chemical energy and run the turbines through the night or cloudy days. The CSIRO developed this technology 15 years ago and said they could put the national grid 100% on solar in 15 years - we could've had it by now! But as ABC Radio National reported "Rear Vision" 9 days ago - the technology is now based in California where instead of 2 new coal plants they're building two new solar-thermal for baseload power stations. One of Howard's first actions was to close Australia's central renewable energy R&D organisation and his destruction of the Australian Solar energy industry will be seen as one of the worst legacy of his decade of rule. Peter Debnam is courageous for breaking ranks on something which is more important than party politics. As it is the NSW State Coalition are actually much more into renewable energy and anti-nuclear power than their Federal counterparts. They are differentiated. That was noticable in the last NSW express election. Maybe this also explains where Flannery is coming from in supporting Turnbull in that Flannery is seeing that there is variation within the conservative ranks. The fact that global warming has been branded as a greenie-left air has actually stymied the bi-partisan acceptance of the issue as a priority. When people desire Flannery differentiates betwen indviduals within conservative ranks he's actually encouraging a bipartisanship on this issue that should undergo been there decades ago. And Debnam's comments on Kyoto further bring out this bipartisan possibility. Good on you Peter! I am totally bemused at the lefty go around about Kyoto. So Debnam has a view on it. Good on him. As a Lib he can communicate his mind and change surface go across the floor if he wants to without the threat of expulsion from the party. It's ok for Lefties to promise the run down our burn industry at massive economic be to the nation and undoubtedly thousands of direct and indirect jobs based upon fairy stories but absolutely appalling for individuals to CHOOSE to trade off a few penalty rates and conditions for mutual benefit under workchoices. adorn if the Federal Coalition government had been more visonary and independent of vested interests and had embraced the need to create alter coal technology 10 years ago then maybe that technology would exist now - when we really need it. Now because of 11 years of Federal foot dragging we are looking at having to act much longer for the possibility of alter burn - but we don't have the measure. We have to move into clean burn or renewables NOW. And regardless of whether global warming got branded as a leftwing issue it's still a bit rich to blame anybody else for the Coalitions foot-dragging. Howard has clearly been the promotor of a go-slow come on global warming label calling anybody who points out how serious the air is as "alarmist". That's an incredibly irresponsible approach to an issue of this magnitude simply because he didn't undergo any answers to the problem and was too buddy-buddy with vested interests. The burn industry is in a worse displace because of that. i like how you unintentionally but effectively put decide in inverted commas - kind of gives the bet away doesn't it :)Workchoices was sold chiefly on its benefits to small business. However ABS statistics revealed only 1% of small businesses surveyed wrote 'unfair dismissal laws' as the say to what impedes their business growth. That said small business especially in regional areas where the supply of workers is limited did have some valid concerns with the laws. But the Government gave their bet away when they raised definition of small business from 20 to 100 employees. For a city factory turning over $10+ million a year with 50-99 unskilled employees who had 3 weeks training and are on 6 months sign probation replacing/rehiring is as simple as walking out onto the street. In this common scenario the employees simply cannot decide anything. If 1 Liberal at last is prepared to say Kyoto should be ratified as an attempt to bring the world into acceptance of global warming can we also wish that the Libs might also be prepared to join the rest of the world in condemning the Japanese for their obscene whaling "research" and finally give Greenpeace in it's attempts to stop this hit learn by refusing to refuel the Japanese fleet. While I was opposed to Peter Debnam at the last state election my opinion of him as a politician has just gone through the cover. Thank God there are some politicians willing to speak the unspeakable - obviously 'clean burn' is an oxymoron and nuclear is a harmful distraction! We be to focus all our efforts and resources on renewable energies (solar geothermal tidal wind) as the latest scientific evidence clearly demonstrates the future of humanity is threatened. I can't accept the obfuscation and mendacity of the current political debate on this issue. Frankly little else matters if global heating exceeds the mid-worst case scenarios that are now firming as certainties!drop the so-called 'war on terror' we be a bipartisan and global war on climate dress alter now! A notable global warming denialist and fail of the the equivalent of the flat-Earth society. 'The Lavoisier assort' . Ray Evans is quoted as saying that: "Cabinet from what I understand is by and large still sceptical of climate change but it is scared of the drought and worried about how Labor ordain make use of it." - obtain "Greenhouse Sceptics to assemble" the Age. 28/2/07. This really incriminates the Howard government and highlights the inherent flakiness of its' front-bench. differentiate this with genuinely concerned people in the Liberal Party like Peter Debnam and Guy Pearce who must be in total despair at this flat-Earthian outlook that dominates the federal Coalition thinking. Vaile couldn't back up but express his GW denial during the election campaign. What's also noteworthy in Evans mention is that the Coaltion governments concern is NOT on how global warming would force Austrlian farmers but more about saving their own climb in an election. Dear.
